At the end of all our hard work that’s an extraordinary achievement, it’s also precisely the transcendental nature of music that underpins reggae and the culture around it. It reminded me that the love I found in my grandmother would always be present for me in her culture for which I am eternally grateful. The Jamrock Cruise introduced me to so many new facets of a culture I had been immersed in since birth, the Mighty Crown farewell session on the fifth day screened a short documentary that delved into the history of the Japanese Sound System. A cultural crossover that had eluded me despite how intertwined they had become.

She closed her set strongly with Wicked Fe Please Me and her biggest hit, Action. Then she delivered the boom with a cleverly constructed Bam Bam medley with songs such as Murda She Wrote, Toots’ original festival slow-burner Bam Bam, and Sister Nancy’s internationally known version of Bam Bam. He reeled off a series of hits such as Hurt the Heart, Damage and My Yes and My No, Tease Her, and closed his set with Raid the Barn and a cover of Wanna Know What Love Is. The new sail dates for Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise 2022 will be December 7-12, 2022 sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas, out of Miami Florida port terminals. The Freedom of the Seas ship is the sister ship to the Independence of the Seas. For the time being, however, Damian isn’t planning to increase the size of Jamrock, nor the frequency of its sails.

You didn't want to throw your life away casually, and I was close to doing that. It took me a bit of time, but then gradually I was able to get control of myself to a certain extent [with] drugs and everything. We're on a similar path really, which has been great because we're in the same boat in terms of lyrics and stuff. We always had a bit of R&B really, so it was actually fun to revisit that. We just hadn't done anything really quite like that for a long time. That was one of the reasons to work with someone like Sam Hollander [for the song "Rita Hayworth"] on The Roadside.

Both Collins and Clinton remain active and funkin', and have offered their timeless grooves to collabs with younger artists, including Kali Uchis, Silk Sonic, and Omar Apollo; and Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, and Thundercat, respectively. Over a bass-heavy reggae rhythm, the Fat Boys shout out a litany of reggae artists including Bob Marley (who died in 1981) and Peter Tosh, who was fatally shot two years after this song’s release. The song’s video features the Fat Boys starring in a western The Good, The Fat and the Hungry that also includes New York based reggae greats the late Denroy Morgan, (father of the sibling reggae band Morgan Heritage) Sammy Dread, Welton Irie and Mikey Jarrett. As the popularity of sound system dances expanded, the selectors’ need for exclusive music to attract large crowds and trump their opponents in heated clashes gave birth to Jamaica’s prolific recording industry, as well as the development of ska, rocksteady and reggae music.
You had to go through a lot to become successful, it wasn't like you just kind of got up there and did a couple of gigs. I don't think some young rock bands really get that today. While there is recognizable personnel and a distinguishable sound throughout a lot of his work, Billy Idol has always pushed himself to try different things. Idol discusses his musical journey, his desire to constantly move forward, and the strong connection that he shares with Stevens. While they’ve been active in the New York scene for a few years, they’ve gained wider acclaim for the irresistible music they began releasing this year, including their debut album, Prism.
Herc played the music and his good friend, Bronx native Coke La Rock, took up the mic to shout out his friends and catchy rhythmic slogans over the records’ instrumental breaks — just like Jamaican emcees or deejays had done on Kingston’s sound systems in the previous decade. That night also played host to the Sound Clash at sea. Unfortunately, this time it was troubled by a few technical difficulties, I don’t think any of us would have willingly swapped places with the cruise sound engineer that night. If a Sound System can bring out that high-octane energy in an exasperated crowd it is a brilliance that cannot be turned away from. For his fifth appearance on the cruise, Capleton performed hits such as Hunt Yuh, Bad Mind, Slew Dem, and Consuming.
His ability to easily shift between rapped verses and Patois-chanted lyrics with optimal dexterity is highlighted on the clever "Kabaka vs. Pyramid," a battle track from his 2016 Accurate mixtape, produced by Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire. As "Here Comes the Hotstepper" ascended to No. 1 in the U.S. (and several other countries) a bidding war ensued and Kamoze signed to Elektra Records. Disillusioned with the lack of remuneration, he walked away from that deal after releasing just one album.
This week, GRAMMY.com spoke with Billy Idol about his latest EP, Cage, and continuing to rock through decades of changing tastes. Their music manages to be both nostalgic and futuristic — and impossible to sit still to. 2021 single "Be Kind" is sweet, mellow and groovy, perfect chic lounge funk. Shiro Schwarz’s latest track, the joyfully nostalgic "Hey DJ," is a collab with funkstress Saucy Lady and U-Key. Her latest release is an upbeat nod to classic West Coast funk, produced by Middleton, and follows her February 2022 groovy, collab-filled album, On Repeat.
He's going through a lot, and I wish him the best. He's a fantastic person, and it's a shame that he's struggling so much with his addictions. You were ahead of the pop-punk thing that happened in the late '90s, and a lot of it became tongue-in-cheek by then. It didn't have the same sense of rebelliousness as the original movement. [When writing] "Running From The Ghost" it was easy to go, what was the ghost for us?
It came out really good and it's very Billy Idol. In fact, I think it’s more Billy Idol than Miley Cyrus. She’s a really great person and she works at her singing — I watched her rehearsing for the Super Bowl performance she gave. She rehearsed all Saturday morning, all Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning and it was that afternoon. It's more the record company that she had didn't really get "Night Crawling"— it was one of the best songs on Plastic Hearts, and I don't think they understood that. They wanted to go with Dua Lipa, they wanted to go with the modern, young acts, and I don't think they realized that that song was resonating with her fans.
A lot of groups in the old days would be together three to five years before they ever made a record, and that time is really important. In a way, what was great about punk rock for me was it was very much a learning period. I really learned a lot [about] recording music and being in a group and even writing songs. Today, funk lives in many places, with its heavy bass and syncopated grooves finding way into many nooks and crannies of music. There's nu-disco and boogie funk, nodding back to disco bands with soaring vocals and dance floor-designed instrumentation.
"All of the artists involved are proud to see reggae presented on this platform and that shows in the caliber of their performances. From the participation of the fans, to the production to the people who run the boat, you can feel reggae's positive vibrations." Dancehall icons like Bounty Killer, T.O.K., Cham and Ding Dong will heat up the crowd, while reggae acts from all generations like Johnny Osbourne, Morgan Heritage, Cocoa Tea, Sizzla, J Boog and Kabaka Pyramid will tap into conscious minds alike. Cruisers will also swoon to the sounds of lover’s rock from singers Maxi Priest, Tarrus Riley, Christopher Ellis, Etana and newcomer Naomi Cowan. Defending sound system champion Warrior Sound has also announced his return for the annual Sound Clash At Sea.
This year will mark the 7th installment of the Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise, and we promise you, it will be huge.
